My name is Luz Maria and am currently 17 years old. I am a first and third generation student. My grandfather on my mother’s side of the family and my father migrated from Mexico to the United States at a young age. My family and I have lived in a hispanic neighborhood on the Southwest side of Chicago. I have 3 older siblings: 2 brothers and 1 sister. I intend to study Mechanical Engineering in college. When I first started high school, I thought about what I wanted to do in college and was interested in pursuing art. I had always enjoyed creating pieces but realized I didn’t get enough satisfaction out of it. During sophomore year, I had taken a physics class and became genuinely interested in learning about classroom topics and its applications to the real world. Mechanical Engineering combines my passion for physics and art. Since January 2017, I have been on the Chicago Knights Robotics Team. While on the team, I have spent my time mainly contributing to the manipulative functions of the robot including the climbing mechanism, gear collection, and fuel shooter. My participation on the team has given me the opportunity to meet other teens from a part of Chicago I did not previously associate myself with. In addition, it gave me the privilege to work with mentors who have exposure to the field from which I learned new skills regarding engineering.
